Strawberries, wineberries, Japanese maple, pear flowers, sansho shoots, gumi…

Image
Grew four strawberry plants last October…
Managed to harvest just a few of the fruits…
Am hoping they will start to flower more…

Image
The Japanese wine-berries have started to ripen…
Now, compared to the strawberries, this wine-berry grows somewhat ‘wildly’ in our property…
Some years ago, I took back some cuttings that grew wild in the hills…
And they have spread very well in our property, growing amidst the most persistent of weeds…
And their fruits are so lovely to eat…
We have learned to first freeze them, and my missus just pops a few of them on top of our yogurt in the mornings… lovely…

Image
The Japanese maple tree provides a nice photo opportunity even in spring time…
I am not so sure but I think this could be a flower of the maple…

Image
And this, the seeds, perhaps?

Image
This photo of the pear flower buds was shot some time ago, probably in early April?
I look forward to enjoying their fruits this coming autumn… (hopefully, that is…)

Image
This is a Japanese pepper plant, called ‘sansho’ (山椒) in Japanese…
The plant grew naturally in our property, and I only need to trim it each winter…
Come spring, we enjoy eating the young shoots as a garnish for a wide variety of dishes…
Japanese food lovers may know this ‘sansho’ that is sometimes served with grilled unagi (eel)…

Image
And finally, a shot of the flowers of the ‘gumi’ tree…
Did a check on the net and found out that it is also called ‘silverberry’…
Their fruits are very pretty to look at, but unfortunately, their taste is nothing to shout about… (stay tuned for pictures this coming autumn…)

Your berries look fab! I was so disappointed. Some kind of worm thing infested my strawberries. A small ( really, really small) teeny white worm type mushi. They dart really fast in and out of the dirt around the strawberry roots and they also crawl up the plant and eat it. I don’t know what they are.

oh my Lrong- you have been busy with fun photo sessions. JUST LOVE your macro photos! I have been busy putting more edible food in our landscape. I put another strawberry patch in as well as other berry bushes + grapes. Your berries look good! YUM 🙂 fresh or on top of yogurt the best way to eat them:-)
